AntiAging Skin Care Products

The market for antiaging skin care products is growing rapidly. New antiaging solutions are being discovered almost every day.

Now some companies are advertising their antiaging lotions as Botox alternatives. In this section, I will look into some of the more effective cosmetic treatments available to combat the effects of aging.

The Skin Care Problem

As you age, your skin undergoes a series of changes. Collagen and elastin, the substances that keep your skin smooth and young looking, break down leading to the droopy, flabby skin that everyone encounters as they get older.

While your genetic background has some bearing on how soon and how much this breakdown will make itself visible, the single biggest cause of skin damage is exposure to the sun, especially those sun burns you suffered as a child.

No matter what your age, if you want to keep a youthful appearance, use good broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15. Apply the sunscreen liberally, and reapply it every two hours when out in the sun or after going swimming. Try to avoid the sun at the hottest parts of the day and when not sunbathing, wear clothing and a hat to shield your skin from the sun.

Do your children or grandchildren a big favor and make sure they are protected when they go out. I’ve read articles that estimate that 85% or so of the sun damage we sustain occurs within our first 14 years of life.

Sun exposure causes those wrinkles on your face, hands and arms, and other parts of your body that you exposed to the sun. Along with the breakdown of collagen and elastin, the skin loses its ability to retain moisture. The result is loose, baggy, dry skin, which can give the skin a leathery appearance.

After decades of affording you some natural protection from the sun’s aging and burning ways, the skin’s melanin simply gives out. It coagulates into those little brown spots we call age spots. This leaves the remainder of the skin exposed to the sun even more vulnerable. Of course, this also increases the risk of skin cancer.

Add in the effects of gravity, maybe exposure to cigarette smoke and environmental irritants and a lifetime of facial expressions, and you begin to notice the lines around your eyes, at the corners of your mouth, across your forehead and sagging skin in your throat.

AntiAging Skin Care Solutions

It wasn’t that long ago that the only way to try to lessen the effects of aging was through the use of moisturizers. However, new antiaging skin care products with proven effectiveness are now available. What used to be considered advertising hyperbole, is now true in more and more cases.

Neuropeptides, especially, are advancing the ability of topical cosmetics to effectively restore some of the skin’s elasticity by rebuliding collagen.

Of course, you have to be realistic about these antiaging skin care products. They help you look younger by increasing the rate epidermal cells slough off, which encourages the creation of new collagen. They are capable of filling in fine lines and wrinkles and smoothing and tightening the skin. But there is a limit to the improvement you can expect.
